The history of Mali is characterized by great empires! Among them were the Empire of Ghana, The Empire of Mali, the Songhaï Kingdom, the Toucouleur Kingdom and the Sénoufon Kingdom. Towards the end of the 19th century, colonization put an end to these empires.  However, in 1960, Mali obtained its independence. The first leader of independent Mali was Modibo Keita, followed by Moussa Traoré, Alpha Omar Konaré, and the current president Amadou Toumani Touré.  The following images are illustrative of the beauty and diversity of Mali!
